A drama movie can fascinate you through its variety of themes, conflicts and treatments. Because drama movies represent what can happen in real life, these are considered common film elements. The situations involved in a drama movie are realistic, as the main focus is set on emotions. You do not necessarily have to cry while watching a drama movie on television, in theaters or through the Internet. Some drama films are actually more subtle, putting on display some aspects of ordinary living. This means that you cannot just judge a good drama movie on its ability to make you burst into tears, but also on its ability to make you emphatise with the main character. The characters are supposed to show their emotional and character development.
Subcategories of a drama movie
Due to its varied themes, a drama movie can still be divided into sub-genres. A romantic drama movie deals with a romantic relationship that is tested by many obstacles, such as tragic events. The focus is on the development of romantic emotions amid despair. A crime or legal drama movie can still be heart-wrenching but mostly involves themes such crimes and the justice system. A legal drama movie may take the side of either the accused or the accuser, while a historical drama movie focuses on notable historical events. A biographical drama movie portrays the life of real persons-- historical or contemporary.
Themes used in a drama movie
Like in other genres, drama movies encounter recurring themes. These themes include, but are not limited to, the following: mental illness, fight for civil rights, injustice, social or community problems, intergenerational conflict, political conflict, wars and controversial topics.
A drama movie makes use of themes that can produce highly emotional story lines or, at least, significant character development. Note that the war movie, which may be considered a genre in itself, is included in the themes a drama movie may use. This is because war can elicit very strong emotions.
The drama movie versus the action movie
A drama movie can be slow-moving at first. The inner turmoil of its characters, however, may still be expressed in other ways, such as through dialogue or facial expressions. Compared to a drama movie, an action movie stresses more on the physical action rather than the character development. Action movie heroes also do not necessarily deliver complicated acting, but their actors have to keep in shape to be convincing.
